OCR: PERSPECTIVES AND PROJECTS DEIMOS PROJECT Space exploration has obviously suffered from budget MARS ONE PROJECT restrictions. In 1969, after US astronauts had taken their first steps on the Moon, NASA was looking toward a manned mission to Mars as early as 1980. Of course, these plans were not carried out; instead, unmanned craft were launched to the Red Planet, first the Mariner probe, then the Viking I and 2 landers in 1975. The United States did not attempt another Mars mission for 15 years, when it launched Mars Observer. Unfortunately, after a month, this probe went dead and a billion dollars of technology was lost in space ... As a result of this failure, the Mesur (Mars Environment Survey) program was suspended. This project called for the launch of 16 modules, automated stations, and small vehicles between 1999 and 2003. The Mars Pathfinder was the only launch that survived the budget cutbacks. Launched in late 1996, Mars Pathfinder will land on Mars with a small robot vehicle in 1997. Meanwhile, to replace Mars Observer, two orbiters-Mars Global Surveyors 1 and 2-will be placed in Mars orbit in 1997 and 1998, to conduct a complete study of the Red Planet. MARS BETAT
